Day 26 ( A short travel day) Hemet, CA - Chula Vista, CA   96.1 miles, New total = 5,453.4 miles
Left Hemet about 9AM and headed south to San Diego.  Our immediate objective was the USS Midway Museum (the aircraft carrier Midway in permanent retirement mooring in San Diego harbor).  Our friend and traveling companion, Dave Smith, was stationed aboard the Midway during the Korean War in the early 50's.  Dave is excited to share his memories and show us this memorial of the past.  The dilemma we faced was that nowhere could we find any information about parking for RV's at or near the ship.  When we arrived in the city, we were no more successful and finally we called the campground where we had reservations and found we could check in early, so there we went and decided to delay our trip to the ship until tomorrow.  We were told we could get a bus from the campground and then the San Diego Trolley to within a few blocks of the ship. So for the rest of the day we relaxed, played some cribbage and did some longer range trip planning.
It looked like the day was going to end with little to report. But... things changed when I noticed, a few campsites away, there was a biker (bicycle) traveler working on his cycle and it was obvious from the scattered pile of gear, that he was a long distance traveler.  This instantly brought to my mind a recollection from my sons long distance trip from Seattle to Mexico on his bike in 2007.  He had related to us that in 5 weeks of camping down the West coast, it was not until the last night, when he was here in this same campground, was he ever invited to dinner by a fellow camper.  It was an older married couple who shared their meal and their evening with him.  He was very moved by them and and here in front of me was the opportunity for Jan and I to return the courtesy/hospitality to another lonely traveler.
Jan quickly went over and invited him to join us for a imprompto meal.  It turned out he had another friend biking with him who would be back shortly.  Obviously he was invited also.  The meal was a mix of many things we had in the fridge, but no one left the table hungry.  We found out that they were (2) Canadians just out of college on a trip from Vancouver to Cabo St Lucas in Mexico. Our meal and talking lasted well into the dark and we learned many enlightening facts about Canadian forestry, politics and wilderness travels. We also compared stories about our common trip route down the Pacific Coast. (Sorry no pictures today)
