Day 27 (A sightseeing day) Visiting the USS Midway Museum in San Diego -0- miles, Total = 5453.4
We walked about a 1/2 mile to the Bus stop and took the Bus and then the Trolley to within 2 blocks of the pier.  San Diego has a very clean, on-time transit system that we could use for $5 all day.  As I said yesterday, this was the ship that Dave spent 2 years of his life on when he was 17 -19 years old.  There aren't many new Father's that have more pride than Dave does for this proud old ship.

We toured he decks from top to bottom (not necessarily in that order) and had lunch in the FanTail Cafe.

The carrier had undergone many changes since Dave served on board but he was still pretty familiar with all her spaces.  On the flight deck ( I believe that is Deck 01) there were a number of Navy aircraft, most all of which were at one time or other deployed on this carrier in its 47 year active service from 1945 - 1992.

Here is one picture taken from a very forward section of the flight deck looking aft.  The deck is over 1000' long and covers over 4 acres.

One of the sad things was that Dave could not show us where he was berthed while on board as the space had been since converted into an officers berth. In another enlisted man's berth area though, I was able to slip into the middle berth of the 3 level berth with some degree of difficulty.  Getting out was even more difficult.  I guess there made for younger men!

Jan was intrigued to see the galley area to compare it to the spaces she had seen on board her Dad's subs when she was younger.  She said they looked like banquet halls compared to the subs.  Dave also showed us the scullery (that's where they wash the dishes and pots & pans) as he had spent some time there also. Overall it was a very educational and enjoyable day that I would recommend to anyone visiting San Diego, and if you can do that with someone who had served aboard the ship, you're in for a much greater treat!
Tomorrow we begin or trek eastward with a next destination of Grand Canyon. We do have 1 night on the road between here and there I believe in Blythe, CA, which is right on the CA/AZ border.
